Ep 19 – Zach Mercurio – Purpose: The Invisible Leader

Zach Mercurio is a speaker, author, and purpose and meaningful work consultant. In his first job out of college, “selling air” for a radio station, Zach found himself disillusioned with the working world, just living for 2/7 of the week – the weekend. A powerful conversation with an inspired taxi driver at a park in D.C. led him to question everything. He then left his job, took massive action and started searching for answers. Leading him down a path of helping others to discover and enact purpose.

Instead of the question, “What’s my purpose?” Zach encourages people to ask, “How can I best serve others?” It’s important to concentrate on what your skills and strengths are to figure out how you can best serve. In addition, it is important to develop a purpose-led mindset, developing the daily habits to live purposefully. After all,  purpose’s benefits come from practice, not just introspection.

In addition to personal purpose, Zach focuses on organizational purpose. Companies are often resistant to change, but if you help them experience purpose it’s hard to go back to the old way of doing things. After all, Zach shares that research finds the best leaders aren’t people, but are big other-centered purposes.
